I don’t know about you, but I tend to “reset” in September. As the leaves start to turn colour, and the temperatures start to get cooler, there comes this feeling of starting afresh.
We can all embrace those dog days of summer and try to fit “just one more” vacation adventure in, enjoying all the abundance that is coming out of gardens before the first frost, another couple of trips around the lake or visiting with far away friends and family. Don’t get me wrong – I love these days too!
But there is something to be said for the extra little crackle in the air as summer starts to wind down and the children start to get ready to go back to school. I always feel as if the start of school in September is the start of a new year.
New clothes, new shoes, new school supplies, new schedules, new friends, new classes – there is so much “new” at this time of year that I find it is also a great time to look inwards as a business owner.
Quite often, during the fall, as school is starting to get underway, we are in a different frame of mind than when we are in the middle of winter after the “official” new year. We are feeling happy and refreshed from a multitude of fun summer adventures and we are ready and more than willing to press that “reset” button at this time of year.
It is a great time to reminisce about what was amazing about your summer – what you would like to experience more of in your future – and to start making plans to make that happen. Did you have a chance to spend time with your family on the water or around a campfire? Did you get to visit some far away places or visit special attractions or attend an amazing concert?
But you can also look at what didn’t work out so well. Did you get pulled away too often to manage an issue at work? Were you able to get out on that boat or visit that attraction but were still tied to your phone for work, and not able to fully be in the moment? Or maybe you just weren’t able to get away at all, because there always seemed to be “one more” thing to deal with before you could even think about some down time?
Now is a fantastic time to sit back and really plan for the future. You have an opportunity to think about how you would like to see next summer – or the summer after that – to look like, and you can start implementing changes to make that happen.
It could be a different marketing strategy, a different business model, a restructuring of staff, an overhaul of your business processes. It could mean having to bring in more equipment, sending different messaging to your customers, bringing in new products or services, getting rid of some products or services, setting some solid boundaries and expectations, or implementing new software. There are so many options!!
It is a great time of year to take a deep breath and enjoy still having one foot in vacation mode and one foot in new year mode, while having a “reset” and thinking of this time of year as a fresh start with a “new” year!
It is the perfect time to plan for an outstanding adventure – both personally and within your business!
